Intentions of this webinar

That webinar was the second in a series of events that explored future educational challenges arising from rapidly emerging technologies impacting societies and communities.

In that webinar, researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers had their say through a panel discussion and online comments, exchanging experiences and views on respective thematic areas. All participants had the opportunity to join the discussion via moderated chat and Twitter during the webinar or comment on issues discussed in a forum afterwards.

The webinar ran for 90 minutes and involved a panel of experts who were asked to talk for 5-10 minutes.

The webinar was supported by a moderator of the panel and a co-moderator (to summarize and discuss questions or contributions through tweets and chats received during the webinar). Participants were able to express their experiences and challenges related to the theme.

They were encouraged to outline their context, the kind of activities in which they were involved, and the problems they faced. The platform BBB or jit.si was used for synchronous sessions during the webinar.

The event was free – there was no registration fee.

However, it was noted that due to likely high interest in the event, online participation was restricted to the first 100 registered participants. If individuals did not manage to register in the first 100, they still had access to the recording and could still submit their comments and short contributions.

Alexander Flor, University of the Philippines (Open University)

Alexander Flor is Professor at the University of the Philippines (Open University). He currently runs as Dean of the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies and Coordinator of the Doctor of Communication Program. Among his fields of interests are Environmental Communication, Knowledge Management (KM4D), and Mixed Methods Research. He was awarded the One UP Professorial Chair in knowledge management (KM4D) for teaching and research. He served as Chair of the Technical Committee on Alternative Learning Systems of the Commission on Higher Education under the Office of the President of the Philippines.

Corinne Latham

Corinne Latham is the Principal of Seaview Primary School and Nursery Unit in Belfast. Educator, Educational Writer, Presenter and Blogger. Background in Educational Technology. TES Winner for the use of technology to improve outcomes for young people. Her school has won many awards and accolades for their work both locally and nationally.

Jens Myrup Pedersen, Aalborg University

Jens Myrup Pedersen is Full Professor at the Department of Electronic Systems, Aalborg Universitet. He has actively participated in projects related to Communication Networks and their influence in the society and education (Community Drive: Teaching Children And Young People To Transform Cities Through Community And Data-driven Methods, Improving Employability through Internationalisation and Collaboration , Implementing Europe's Future Broadband Infrastructure, etc.), and is author and co-author of a large number of publications in specialized outlets.

Paul Prinsloo, University of South Africa

Paul Prinsloo is Professor at the Department of Business Management, University of South Africa. His fields of specialization are Open and distance learning, and Learning analytics. He has actively participated in projects related to Facilitating equitable access and quality education for development with focus on South African International distance education students, and also researching the Scope, synergy and uptake of research into higher education in southern Africa. He is author and co-author of a large number of publications in specialized outlets.

Alexandre Santos, University of Minho

Alexandre Santos is Associate Professor at the Departament of Informatics, Computer Communications and Networks Group, Universidade do Minho. Among other, his fields of research are Unicast and Multicast Routing Solutions for Mobile and Mesh Networks Modelling, Design and Performance Analysis of Communication Protocols, and Overlay and Software Defined Networks. He has actively participated in projects related to the design o f a coordinated framework for cyber resilient supply chain systems over complex ICT infrastructures, telecommunications and collaborative ITS applications, and Information centric ONE Simulation. He is author and co-author of a large number of publications in specialized outlets.

Outcomes of Webinar 2

The benefit for society is to build collaboratively and make visible a wide landscape of the consequences of this technological development across a wide variety of social environments. Such a landscape can then be used as a map for different actors to think about their policy, to strategically orient their practices or research perspectives, enabling those in specific contextual situations to:

- Gain new educational, societal, theoretical, and technical insights about the impact of computer networks and communication on the economic and ecological transformations of society
- Consider analytical methods and tools being developed through the impact of computer networks and communication on the economic and ecological transformations of society, and their applications in different educational curricula
- Reflect on basic indispensable scientific foundations of those methods and tools, e.g. concerning important understandings about networks and communication systems
- Participate in the design of specific elements of the ZD through synchronous contributions during the webinar (chat, tweets), asynchronous follow-up discussion (forums), or short contributions to the ZD matrix
- Share insights into various practical contexts and examples of implementation in different countries
- Build up networks of researchers, practitioners, decision-makers to promote joint work on thematic projects
- Develop a (co-operative) publication for a follow-up conference

What the webinar involves

Prior to the webinar, basic literature will be distributed as a preparation and stimulus (1-2 papers), suggested further reading, and the relevant extract from the matrix matching the topic of the webinar.
